During the heart of World War II, in March of 1943, cryptoanalysts at Britain’s code-breaking center have discovered to their horror that Nazi U-boats have changed their Enigma Code. Authorities enlist the help of a brilliant young man named Tom Jericho to help them break the code again. The possibility of a spy within the British code-breakers’ ranks looms and Tom’s love, Claire, has disappeared. To solve the mysteries, Tom recruits Claire’s best friend, Hester Wallace. In investigating Claire’s personal life, the pair discovers personal and international betrayals.

Iris, based on the life of revered British writer and philosopher Iris Murdoch, is a story of unlikely yet enduring love. As a young academic, teaching philosophy at Oxford, Murdoch meets and eventually falls in love with fellow professor John Bayley, a man whose awkwardness seems in stark opposition to the spirited self-confidence of his future wife. The story unfolds as snippets of time, seen through Bayley’s eyes. He recalls their first encounter over 40 years ago, activities they enjoyed doing together, and Iris’ charismatic and individualistic personality. These images portray Murdoch as a vibrant young woman with great intellect and are contrasted with the novelist’s later life, after the effects of Alzheimer’s disease have ravaged her. Murdoch’s great mind deteriorates until she is reduced to a mere vestige of her former self, unable to perform simple tasks and completely reliant on her at times frustrated yet devoted husband.

Shu Qi stars as Cat, a gorgeous high-tech thief who’s teamed with a bevy of equally gorgeous beauties. The film’s opening details her attempt at lifting a diamond necklace, which also happened to be her first meeting with gorgeous male thief Lok (Julian Cheung). They escape together and passion begins. However, three years later the two have gone their separate ways, and Cat has abandoned the life. But, Cat discovers that “whenever she tries to get out, they pull her back in.” Godfather clichés aside, it seems that the Russian mafia have kidnapped Lok, and want Cat to complete a job for them.
